Context
In the aftermath of the earthquake that hit Morocco’s Atlas Mountains region on Friday’s late evening, a TSF team deployed to support humanitarian response.
The 6.8-magnitude quake caused extensive human and material damage - with thousands killed and many injured, particularly in rural areas and in Marrakech.
Deployment
Our team quickly mobilized to reach the affected areas on Saturday evening.
Mission
TSF is conducting an on-site assessment of the current situation and needs of the Moroccan population. The most affected areas appear to be Al Haouz, Taroudant, Chichoua and the city of Marrakesh.
The objective of the team is to go in the most-affected areas where networks are destroyed or down, and to create telecommunication centers in coordination with crisis units.
In collaboration with local players, we were able to gather information on the state of telecoms network in affected areas. Field assessments showed that telecoms networks were rapidly functional and relatively stable.
